Upspiral: An opposite imagination in the Book of Judges

Updated: Jul 21

We look up to our leaders. We worship at the tabernacle. We gather at the church. We do missions through missionaries. Is this what the people of God should be? Yes, but No! This is only part of the story. When the challenges come, when we have to go back to our own lands, where our most favorite leaders can no longer be around. Joshua gave us are challenge: "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the Lord."

After everyone said they will serve their God, the book of Judges narrates the downward spiral of how God’s people failed to build up a healthy relationship God repeatedly in the cycles of:

(1) the people rebel

(2) People suffer from their sins

(3) the people cry for deliverance

(4) God sends a judge – a deliverer

(5) there is a period of rest and peace

The society failed to uplift it's spiritual identity as a people of God since they did not fully entrust themselves to their real leader - Yahweh.

However, it should not be the same to us. We recognize Jesus as our true leader of the church and together we can stir a motion in this society, which we do things oppositely - An Upward Spiral, where people constantly engage in the cycles of:

(1) the people connect - with God and one another

(2) People experience love and support for doing what is right

(3) the people worship for His faithfulness

(4) God speaks to every one of us - in our everyday life

(5) Rejoice in rest and peace

May we uplift this world with a very simple proclamation that

But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD

Joshua
